Building your professional network
A quality network isn't measured by the number of contacts, but by relationships you can actually mobilize. This guide lays the foundations.
Choose quality over volume
Ten solid relationships are worth more than a hundred contacts you wouldn't know how to mobilize the day you need them. Before adding someone, ask yourself a simple question: in what context could I get back in touch with this person? If the answer isn't clear, that's fine, but better to know it than to accumulate digital business cards without intention.
Document every meeting
Context, date, topic discussed: relationship memory is built meeting after meeting, not retroactively. Get into the habit of noting these details within hours of an exchange, while they're still fresh. It's this discipline, more than the number of contacts, that makes the difference six months later.
Maintain rather than accumulate
A network degrades if it's never reactivated. Regularly reach out to your oldest contacts, not just the most recent ones: a simple message to check in is enough to keep a relationship alive, and beats two years of silence followed by a favor request.
