Finding your first freelance clients

Before looking for unknown clients, most are already within reach in your existing network.

Your existing network is your first market

Most first assignments come from people who already know you, not cold outreach. Before looking elsewhere, look at who in your network might need what you offer, or know someone who does.

Make what you offer visible

Many missed opportunities aren't due to lack of skill, but because no one knew you offered that service. Describe your services clearly, with an indicative rate if possible: it avoids back-and-forth and reassures.

The first assignment counts double

A successful first collaboration almost always opens the next one, by referral. Treat it like it's the most important one of the year, because it often shapes the ones that follow.
